(Picking up from the last comment thread...)
Mon'Fargret and Betham check out the nearly-dead female guard while Zeton sorts through the gear on the toasted male one.
The female guard is a Sark-type humanoid, meaning she could be Besteeng, but removing her helmet reveals round facial features that hint more toward Sarkon. Her wrister also appears to be in Sarkish script (but with a Yangae-language window open). Her main weapon is clearly the sophisticated baffler turret on top of her helmet, but the rest of her gear looks a bit primitive, even antique. There's the semi-automatic, small-caliber shotgun she was using (which has a laser designator/ range finder, possibly for use with time-detonating shells). She also has a well-used hellrager carbine and a large revolver that looks positively ancient. A large and attractively-styled (but now partly burnt) bandoleer holds, in addition to extra ammo for her firearms, a collection of shuriken and a handsome-looking dagger. Her utility belt holds still more ammo plus what appears to be a belt-mounted power generator and an accumulator array, obviously to power the helmet turret.
The male guard is even more intriguing. His size and build also suggest a Sark-type humanoid. The rigid parts of his armor actually held up surprisingly well considering the type of firepower that hit it, but the lighter, flex-jointed area of the lower torso is burst open, and there is little more than smoldering charcoal underneath. Zeton decides not to bother removing the guard's helmet, and instead focuses on his kit. In addition to the rapid-firing gauss assault rifle that he used (briefly) during the fight, the guard has what appears to be a grenade launcher. (Luckily, none of the shells tucked into his thermal-resistant bandoleer went off.) He also has a gauss pistol with a laser designator and an impressive but awkward-looking sword. His various (surviving) belts and pockets include extra clips for his firearms plus a Foldorian-made first aid kit, a hand-held multi-spectral flashlight (to supplement his helmet lights), a pocket welding torch, and what is most likely a small robot servant. His wrister is in a script similar to Sarkish, but not one Zeton recognizes. It also has a window open that is in Yangae script. Finally, the guard's helmet has a strange, antenna-like attachment whose purpose is uncertain, but it reminds Zeton of enhanced psy transponders he has seen used by Ehrlathagi spacers.
"Can someone use any of this equipment?" asks Zeton. "I don't think he'll be needing it anymore. I don't think I can manage the grenade launcher, but if no one else wants the assault rifle, I might take that for added firepower." Removing the guard's wrister and holding it toward Nekshi, he adds, "Do you think we can use this to listen in to the folks at the Eye of Tann?"
Over by the north entrance, Bina succeeds in convincing Lirassa to stop fussing over Ham and allow herself to be helped. The fallen priestess then leads the Besteeng over to the survival pod, which apparently has a medical station. Now that Lirassa is in full view with her helmet removed, it can be seen that her neck is injured, and her shoulder is awash with gore. Bina, who is about a head and a half shorter, is struggling to keep something pressed against the wound.
"It's just a flesh wound," Lirassa can be heard to say in a voice that is somewhat slurred.
Muttering darkly to himself, Ham sets to work on his own injury.
Pru comes down off the rack, eases herself onto her feet, and limps a step or two.
Betham grimaces and then glares at the Yangae. "You're gonna need to do something about that," he says. He nods toward Bina, who appears to be singing to the med station.
Pru only just fails to suppress a grimace of her own. "I'll deal with it," she retorts hoarsely.

Hm. Any gun large enough for Farbett? Maybe grenade launcher? Widjgleebe says with glee.
(Maybe I should make an illustration.)
The grenade launcher is of modest bore size (30mm for those with military experience) and overall about the size of a sawed-off shotgun...albeit with a drum magazine underneath. To Widjgleeby it would be just small enough to wield with one hand but a bit awkward (rather like an old-style flintlock pistol would be to you). It's not too small for a two-handed grip.
The problem is that no one knows what kind of ammo is in it.
All the other firearms are of pistol, carbine, or assault rifle size scaled for a human and might be a little awkward for Widjie.
Anyone else want to claim any of the weapons or gear?
"Not I", said the frog.
(I'm relieved to see someone else remembers that. "Do it yourself, quack quack, qua-qua-quack!")
"That carbine," says Pru, pointing at the "hellrager" Betham is holding. "Can I maybe use that?"
Betham balks.
"It's only fair!" adds Pru. "You took my carbine a day or two ago, and I'm gonna need more firepower!"
"Have you ever seen one of these?" asks Betham. When Pru gestures negative, he hands the weapon to her. "Just don't shoot it at close range...unless you have something to duck behind! Now let somebody do something about that hip!"
"I'll deal with it!" retorts Pru.
"You'll get left behind!" snaps Betham. "You're not going into action with a cracked hip! Now there's probably some orthogen in the survival pod. Have somebody dose it!" When Pru scowls at him, he adds, "It's either that or let someone cut you open and splice it! Or shall we have Bina heal you?"
Glaring and wincing, Pru squats down to grab the extra clips for the hellrager. Then she starts to limp toward the survival pod.
"Someone want to dose me?" she asks sarcastically.
"Widj gets the grenade launcher... let's just hope it's not loaded with training rounds. OK, who's next? Mey, or Atraktu, can I interest you in something? Nekshi, would you care for a bit more firepower? If any of you can handle the assault rifle, you're welcome to it. It might be to our advantage if as many of us are armed as possible."
While the others decide what they want, Zeton examines the wrister from the male guard to see if there is any way to glen any information from it, without alerting anyone else of what has just transpired. If he's unable to learn anything from the wrister, he'll turn his attention to the small robot.
Atraktu's only reply is a steady, blank stare with her cat-like eyes.
"I already have one of those," says Mey'Luskar haughtily, pointing at the first aid kit. Then she points over at Bina, who is carefully working on Pru's hip with some kind of device while looking at an interactive holo display. In a quieter, gentler voice, she adds, "Even if she didn't get good marks, she's the best medic in the party, and she's got nothing but the clothes on her back! Let's give it to her!" Then she hesitates before pointing at the male guard's pistol. "I think I'd like to have that...if you don't mind."
Nekshi hisses at the group. "Let us spread out and cover the remaining four exits. It would not do to be taken by surprise like these two unfortunates (she gestures at the corpses)."
"I suggest all wounded personnel be moved immediately to the tunnel we just egressed from. No matter the nature of the wound nor how trivial, please, let's set up some kind of triage to make sure everyone is treated properly."
"Once each exit is covered we can discuss allocation of materials acquired by force."
Nekshi wanders over to where Granite Spear is guarding and kneels down and strokes her flanks.
"Who is the bestest soldier ever, *kiss*kiss*....#bruuuuuuup#. Momma loves her good soldier,*kiss*kiss*...#brruuuuuup#
"Nekshi's got a point," says Betham. Then he heads toward where Bina is working on Pru's hip. "How're we doing?" he asks.
"Lirassa's wound is done," she replies, "but she lost a lot of blood." She holds up a packet with a Hergoth medical symbol on it. "She'll probably need a couple of these."
"I'm fine!" protests Lirassa glassily.
Bina holds up a small, green vial. "Maybe one of these, too."
"I'm FINE!" repeats Lirassa.
Betham nods toward Ham. "What about him?"
"He won't let me touch him," replies Bina. Suddenly Pru jerks reflexively. Bina puts down the vial and presses her fingers under Pru's shirt. "Better?" she asks. Pru gestures affirmative. "He has just a mild burn," Bina continues. "It should be alright, if that mess of plasts he put on it doesn't turn into a weird scar."
"And her?" Betham nods toward Pru.
"Almost done," replies Bina. "Just a crack. This unit's a big help. It should be good as new!"
"No other wounded?" asks Betham.
"Just the Farbett that ran away," replies Bina.
Just to recap the gear carried by the guards:
The male guard
- broadsword (unclaimed)
- gauss pistol w/ designator (tentatively claimed by Mey'Luskar)
- gauss assault rifle w/ designator (Zeton will take it if no one else does)
- grenade launcher (claimed by Widjgleeby)
- variable-spectrum flashlight
- Yangae-made first aid kit (unclaimed but recommended give to Bina)
- pocket welder
- small robot
The female guard
- dagger (unclaimed)
- 9 shuriken (unclaimed)
- lg. revolver (unclaimed)
- semi-auto sml. caliber shotgun w/ designator (unclaimed)
- hellrager carbine (claimed by Pru)
- pistol-sized baffler in OCAT turret mount (what can be done?)
- bega belt powerplant (unclaimed)
- belt reserve power accumulator array (unclaimed)
Both guards have wristers. That of the male guard looks to be reasonably sophisticated. The female guard's is stylish but a bit less advanced.
"Well, Nekshi may be correct about our sloppy tactical practices, but honestly, I don't think we have much time to hang around here."
"Constable Betham, I think you're going to want to take a look at this. You too Bina and Mey." Zeton holds the wrister out to shows them the all points bulletin:
FULL ALERT -
Block all passage to those without the key.
Use all means necessary.
Show no mercy against hostiles.
(The time indicator shows that that message has only appeared within the
last few minutes, meaning the guards might not have seen it.
Scrolling down, it reads:)
FULL ALERT -
Civilians without key to be redirected northeast.
Use force if necessary,
Avoid killing force against unarmed civilians
or the Farbetts at the north opening.
Regard any mixed-race groups or armed individuals as hostile.
Engage immediately.
(A little further down:)
PRIORITY URGENT -
If either of the persons in the image below are seen,
Immobilize and capture if possible,
Kill otherwise.
Eliminate all companions.
Do not allow to escape at any cost.
(Below that last entry is a pic...of Mey'Luskar and Bina sitting
together at Wirg's earlier today. Under the pic is both women's names
plus the note:)
WARNING -Bina [the Herg] is a trained priestess with witch powers.
Treat as armed and dangerous.
"So, my question is, what is this 'key' the message refers to? Do any of the guards have what looks like a pass that might help us?"
Betham purses his lip. "There was a lookout at Wirg's, I take it?"
There are some grave glances among the party. Then Mey'Luskar says, "It could have been any of them."
"Well, they got that pic right about the time we were going into the abandoned plantation," Betham observes. "And if these sods got it, you can bet all the guards did. Looks like they just stepped up the alert, though, so either they know something's up, or they're about to do something."
"Wait," says Pru, watching as Bina finishes up on her hip. "Don't take this wrong, but why would they want to capture Bina? If they know she's...I mean, if it were me, I'd just shoot her!"
"You're welcome!" retorts Bina edgily, and she starts putting the medical equipment away.
Key, What about those papers Hergoth gave us earlier? symbols on paper did strange things back at the temple. Glyphs controlling people;Strange symbols in video recording. Maybe lock not metal so key not.
(why would a guy be on guard duty with training rounds in his grenade launcher? besides, training rounds can cause damage. It's just a matter of range)
Mon'Fargret will take the pocket welder and the robot if he can figure out how to control it. From the female, he will take the power packs. He will take the ammo from any weapons left behind and place them in his rucksack. He moves quickly in doing so. If the baffler turret is easily removable from the helmet, he does so.
When finished, he will say, "Which way now? Southwest under the airfield or Southeast?"
While Mon'Fargret busies himself picking stuff up (assuming no one else claims any of the weapons), Lirassa says drowsily, "Widjgleebie might be on to something. Mey...didn't you say you've been there before?"
"Basically," replies Mey'Luskar edgily. "If you're asking me if I know how they...uh...?"
"Well?" prompts Lirassa, her eyes widening strangely.
"Symbols on paper..." mutters Mey'Luskar to herself. She looks up at Widjgleebie. "The key...not metal...a symbol..."
Lirassa shuts her eyes and smiles. "A symbol!" she echoes.
Bina pauses long enough to eye Lirassa warily. Then she pats Pru on the hip. "There you go. Almost good as new!"
"Thanks," says Pru. Then she leans closer, nods toward Lirassa and asks, "Can she, uh...?"
"She can see memories," replies Bina.
Zeton eyes the assault rifle and then leaves it where it is. "Someone who doesn't have a weapon should take this and I'll continue to use my pistol."
Zeton begins to carefully drag the male guard toward an area of the node that will allow him to conceal the dead body with the trash and empty boxes littering the ground.
"We should hide the other guard as well. I'm sure they'll be discovered sooner rater than later, but there's no sense in leaving clues about where we've been and where we're going."
Granite will assist with moving/concealing the other guard's body. Granite will also pick up the Broadsword, and the shuriken. "Never can tell when the sharpness of a blade will be needed..."
[I assume the sword was in some sort of scabbard that Granite could strap on? The shuriken she'll squirrel away into her bag.]
The broadsword is indeed in its own belted sheath. It's pretty cool looking, too...though the blade is maybe a bit heavy for Granite Spear to wield comfortably. It is well balanced, however.
The shuriken are in slots on the same belt.
While Lirassa ruminates over the issue of the key, Bina quietly convinces her to accept a synglobin dose and a vitaglobin booster. It quickly restores a bit more color to the Besteeng's cheeks before she puts her helmet back on.
Bina then asks Ham if he wants a synglobin dose, or at least a painkiller.
Meanwhile, Pru scoops up the assault rifle, saying, "Fine, if no one else wants this..."
"Southwest under the airfield would be quicker," says Betham in reply to Mon'Fargret's question. "Either way's probably going to be guarded. And you can bet they heard our little party here." He throws a sidelong glance at Lirassa.
Realizing that Nekshi has an eye for the pistol she'd intended to claim, Mey'Luskar decides to let the Zorlan have it instead.
Pru then picks up the revolver and holds it out to Mey'Luskar. "Lady, this is a crude toy," says Pru, "but it's better than nothing."
Mey'Luskar wrinkles her nose. "I'd rather have nothing," she says curtly and moves away.
Pru shrugs and turns instead to Bina. "How about you?" she asks.
Bina eyes the weapon as if it were about to bite her. "No!" she says anxiously. "I can't! I'm sworn against violence!"
"You're not wearing your brooch," reminds Pru. "Come on! This is the real world! You're a weak flank without heat!"
"No!" protests Bina, throwing up her hands. "No!"
Mey'Luskar huffs and comes back. "Gimme that!" she snaps, yanking the pistol from Pru's hand.
Meanwhile, Ham picks up the auto shotgun and its ammo bandoleer.
