Where It All Begins...

Mulein

Mul'ein (still known as Morva among the more stubborn Yangae loyalists) is the political and economic capital of Yanda Province. As a city it is modest by any standard, with a registered population of a little under 300,000. However, even that number is twice what it was only a decade ago, the result of rapid growth brought on by recent industrial development. For the most part it is still a quiet and picturesque little city whose architecture is an interesting mix of Hergoth and Yangae styles. The Bal'tem River flows from West to East right through the middle of the city center, both banks adorned with scenic, garden-lined brick walkways that have earned it the nickname "The Wishing Walk" ("Nr'ävåboeth" in Her-Galad, "sa'Pru ta'Varska" in Yangae). The surrounding downtown district has an air of quiet elegance despite its modest size, its cafes and shopping plazas offering perhaps the only semblance of luxury to be found within a radius of many kilometers. Travel a few hundred meters in any direction, however, and the scenery quickly changes; the legacy of the Yangae occupation remains in the form of residential and commercial districts sharply demarcated by class and/or ethnic group.

The districts of Mul'ein:
  • The hilly area north of the city center is Düa (Daua) District. The offices of the municipal authorities are located here, as is Yanda University and the Mul'ein College of the Arts. It is populated mainly by Hergoth and Hertressk of middle or upper-middle class with a small percentage being of the upper crust. Most dwellings are individual houses or condominiums. The whole area carries an atmosphere of peaceful affluence and is generally quite safe.
  • The area south of the city center is Gastra District, which was destroyed during the invasion and rebuilt in Yangae style. Its streets form an almost perfect grid. Local architecture is a hodge-podge of crumbling prefabricated structures and newer constructions of a variety of styles. Most of the dwellings are apartment blocks or relatively cheap housing projects peopled by the working and lower middle classes. The population is perhaps the most ethnically balanced in Mul'ein. A sort of uneasy peace exists between the Hergoth, Hertressk, and Yangae that live in this area, mostly in demarcated neighborhoods, but tempers have been known to boil over on occasion.
  • The southeastern district between the city center and the town of Bal'tem is Grissin, an old Yangae neighborhood. This is loyalist country. Blocks are strictly separated by caste, and the classes do not intermix. Gang violence has been known to occur in this area, mainly between castes if not individual blocks, but outsiders are also advised to be cautious. It is also recommended that traditional Yangae customs and mores be observed to the letter in Grissin, for the locals have little tolerance for "uncivilized" behavior.
  • Further southeast, sandwiched between Grissin and the towns of Bal'tem and Auani, is Sa'Barj ("The Hill"). Like neighboring Grissin, this is also Yangae loyalist country, but the three massive, gaudy palaces there are testament to the fact that it is the abode of the Nobles. The locals tend to be sealed up in their private worlds and don't pay much attention to what goes on outside. They also encourage a degree of sightseeing in their area in hopes of winning sympathy. However, being the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time on Sa'Barj can bring swift capital punishment.
  • Gül'a (Gauha) District is located to the northeast, bordering Düa Ward. It is mainly a residential area, consisting of mostly old homes and apartments. The population is mostly Hergoth and Hertressk of from low to middle class who work in the neighboring districts or in the scattered local commercial zones. There is also a famous tunnel complex in the area built ages ago to house Farbetts. Gül'a can be a bit rough looking but is generally good natured.
  • Danteir District is the northernmost reach of the city, and its topography is a bit more rugged. Long a broken mix of scattered farms and empty wilderness, it is now Mul'ein's main industrial district. Almost all of the factory complexes there were built during the last two decades. Food processing is the main industry, but materials technology is also significant. There are scattered residential areas consisting of an uneasy mix of bleak corporate dorm blocks and isolated housing subdivisions for low- to mid-level career professionals. Hergoth, Yangae, and migrant workers from various parts of the galaxy live and work together as best they can here. The atmosphere tends to be optimistic but tense, and a degree of caution is advised.
  • Ekr'in District lies to the west and northwest of the city center. It is generally of the same class level as Gastra. However, as it was spared from destruction by its hillier topography, it is an old and crumbling urban center with a maze of twisting, narrow streets. Its population is also far more mixed and cosmopolitan, and it is known for being more than a little eccentric. Struggling artists and street performers are most likely to be found here, particularly in Danstul' Park. Ekr'in has perhaps the most notorious night-life districts in Mul'ein, not to mention some very off-color entertainment. The various races and cultures that live in this area tend to be much more tolerant of each other (and of weirdness in general) than in Gastra, but the inevitable accumulation of drifters and the down-and-out means that the crime rate is higher than the city average.
  • Thal'wein District is a narrow tract sandwiched between the southwest edge of the city center, the Bal'tem River, Gastra, and Erweina. During most of the Yangae Occupation this was a notoriously squalid Hergoth ghetto. Since the Reconstruction various government agencies have gone to great lengths to improve the area, including the establishment of the Mul'ein Vocational Training Center, Thal'wein General Hospital, well-financed schools, and higher-quality state-subsidized housing. Indeed, the area is far more beautiful and optimistic than it used to be, but the poorest Hergoth families are still mostly found there, and most Yangae with any pride wouldn't be caught dead within its borders.
  • Erweina (R'wêna) District is a roundish mountain, much of which is considered sacred ground by the local Hergoth. Since antiquity, it has been the location of the local branch Temple of Kai-Tempuera (Kî-Tempur'a) and various associated facilities. The Yangae naturally treated the area with utmost contempt during the Occupation, using it as a target range, a garbage dump, and a prison (often at the same time). It has since been restored and now has a ranking High Priestess for the first time in two centuries. Not surprisingly, the local population is overwhelmingly Hergoth, a large percentage of which have some direct connection with the Temple. Visitors are not only welcome but encouraged, though obvious Yangae loyalists are liable to be viewed with suspicion (if any would even dare go onto the "Witch's Mountain").
  • Mastr'ean is the westernmost reach of the city. It is by far the largest district in terms of land area. Until recently it was a strictly rural area, consisting of wide tracts of farmland interspersed with small village hubs. Recently, however, the band of territory along the border with Ekr'in and the river has become a commercial boomtown. The road that has run through that area since antiquity was widened into a main boulevard about a decade ago, and since then the land in its vicinity has seen an explosion of commercial and residential development, with heated competition between Ergothei, local Hergoth, and Foldorian developers. While economically good for the city, the "strip" is still greeted with ambivalence at best by the mainly Hergoth and Farbett farmworkers who have lived in and worked the area for ages. They are old families, rather grizzled, with very conservative mores but who have long since grown accustomed to working under Yangae authority and have yet to readjust to true Hergoth culture.
Mul'ein is bordered by the coastal towns of Bal'tem to the east, Auani to the south-southeast, and Troya to the north-northeast, the farm towns of Yanda and Bir'ueth to the southwest and west, respectively, and the mountainous town of Tel'atha to the north-northwest. The nearest significant seaport is in Bal'tem with additional small seacraft harbors in Auani and Troya. The nearest aerospace port is Yanda, located in the city in the northeastern corner of Mastr'ean District bordering Danteir District, but it is a relatively small facility. The nearest major aerospace port is in the city of Tal'in, about 120km away but quickly accessible by vacrail tube or shuttle flight.

Basically, the campaign begins assuming all of the characters currently either live or are staying in the Ekr'in District of Mul'ein. From what you know of each other, your current status is as follows:

Zeton the Lybolt - Apparently he's some kind of researcher, reporter, or investigator there on assignment. Currently staying in a cheap but comfortable flat in Ekr'in.

Nekshi the Zorlan - She is also a researcher or reporter there on assignment, which is how she got acquainted with Zeton (i.e. they keep bumping into each other, so they figured they might as well work together as long as it proves beneficial). Currently staying in a very spartan flat in Ekr'in.

Granite Spear the Shurian - Nekshi's "associate", who doesn't talk a whole lot (not at all, when you really think about it!) and is actually kind of scary. Technically shares Nekshi's flat but usually spends her nights in the river.

Widjgleeby the Farbett - A longterm resident of Ekr'in District. Usually works as a housekeeper, but is currently unemployed and desperate for work. For the time being she lives in a communal Farbett "flat" down in the sewers.

Mon'Fargret the Foldorian - A rather mysterious Foldorian immigrant who has wandered around a bit. He wears the crest of the Manager caste but doesn't act like it. Definitely not at all like the Yangae/Foldorians that live in Mul'ein. Has apparently spent time working as a farmhand but currently owns and runs a craft store in Ekr'in together with Dabid. The store includes its own flat.

Dabid the Annuitis - A longterm immigrant who has lived on and wandered around Lyranell for some time. Has done a variety of jobs, but is now mainly content to make a living selling his own arts and crafts in Ekr'in together with Mon'Fargret, with whom he shares the shop and rents a room in the attached flat.

Granite Spear crawls out of the river and looks towards Nekshi's flat. After assuring herself that she is alone, she quickly runs through some melee combat maneuvers. "It's important to develop skill outside of water as in!" she thinks.

After an invigorating workout, she glances back at the river once, and sighs (at least that's what it sounds like as she blows air), and trudges up the embankment towards the house.

Mon’Fargret busies himself hanging branches with silver leaves and red berries to dry in the fresh air. They are from a local source. He figures it will take about 60 days on this planet for the berries to transform into steel hard dark purple beads which can be drilled and made into adornments on any number of things.

Nekshi wakes early, as is her custom, and eats a light breakfast of protein paste and local fruit.

During her repast, she continues her quest to commit the local geopolitical features into her memory (both orgainic and technological).

Watching Granite Spear's antics along the riverbank, she chastises herself on neglecting her physical conditioning and reschedules her daily planner to include a short half-hour daily refresher cross-matched to Granite's dinner cycle.

As she dresses for the day, she peripherally scans the local video news feeds (boring)while reading the local hard copy releases (interesting).

She spends some time preparing messages. The first is to a certain down-on-his(her) luck Farbett named Widjgleeby whose lack of employment oppurtunites she read about recently in the local hard copy (see above paragraph). It is an invitation to lunch, in the local style, with herself, her Shurian advisor(!) and a Lybolt male of some repute. The location is a small local cafe, of which Nekshi has been a customer during her short time on planet. Items to be discussed: 1)The employment of said Farbett as a local guide to well-meaning alien trade representatives. Pay based on knowledge of local labor standards and trade practices.
2) Discussion of naming practices among the Farbett population on planet i.e the name Widjgleeby and its orgins.
3) Scientific curiosity as to the caloric intake of a Farbettolian worker versus a full grown Shurian female. Cafe management may cap ingestion at 6 kg of organic fodder.
Lunch to commence at 1330 local time. RSVP Meson Comm # etc..

The second message is to Zeton, of course. Advising him of the lunch date and the possible inclusion of a local Farbett contact. As well as any minutae Nekshi might have gleaned off of the local news which would be of interest to a Lybolt (?!)

The third message is to the local Labor or employment agency asking about the job history of a certain Farbett named Widjgleeby and any outstanding dues, fines or offenses of which Nekshi should be concerned.

A fourth message is to the District Trade Council requesting an informal meeting to discuss customs fees levied to off-world enterprises. Time and place to be determined at the Council's pleasure.

As she finishes cleaning her teeth, Nekshi pages Granite Spear to her room. She dons her traveling cape and chambers a round in her light pistol and tucks it into her boot.

She plans to take a walk amid the local shops while waiting for replys to her messages.

phewwww!

The fourth message is to the local Criminal Affairs office asking for the same.

Whoops, disregard that last, last sentence. I was thinking of sending a message to the cops and typed it up but decided that's not the type of person Nekshi is. I just didn't delete it all. Sorry!

Dabid awoke with the dawn as usual. Today is glass-blowing day. (He doesn't have any regular schedule to speak of; it just seemed like it should be glass-blowing day, and so it is). Most of the early-morning hours were spent in the studio behind the shop blowing glass baubles which will eventually be set into mounts of tooled metal. It's one of Dabid's favorite art forms and also a fairly good seller, which makes it even better.

Later, as the sun achieved its full, not-quite-yellow color, Dabid stepped out for a breath of fresh air and noticed Mon'Fargret busying himself with something in the little garden behind the shop. Curious, Dabid went for a closer look.

Zigri berries. They would be dried to make beads, a traditional Foldorian/Yangae art form.

Dabid purses his lips and asks, "Feeling a bit sentimental today, my lord?"

Waking up late, Zeton splashes cold water onto his face and washes the sleep out of his eyes.

While trying to sort himself out for the day, Zeton notices there is a message for him and listens to it. It is Nekshi. What time does she want to meet? 1330? Damn that's not very long from now... He send a quick reply telling Nekshi he'll meet her.

No time to listen to the message a second time to get all the details. Zeton quickly showers and dresses to meet Nekshi for the lunch appointment. No doubt Granite Spear will be there. Zeton wonders what sort of mood she will be in today...

Now what was it Nekshi said about hiring a Farbett as a guide? What was the name..., Weedgaglebe? He'll find out soon enough.

As Zeton grabbed his satchel and slung it over his left shoulder and cinched it down so the bag rested comfortably in the middle of his back, he wondered what the day would bring.

Granite Spear looked up at the flashing beacon on top of the house blinking in a foreign, but clear pattern known only to Nekshi. "What now..." Scowling, she increased her pace up the overgrown path, frightening a number of small Squizz (furry marine animals that typically make their nests near the river, and make a hell of a racket at first light).

Arriving at the odd circular door at the base of the house that served as a utility entrance, Granite quickly brushed the plant debris off her hide, and plucked a large quill flower from one of her knee spurs. Pausing once more to gather her thoughts, and control her temper, she pushed the button, and entered the house.

[Hey Moody - is it possible to set the blog to not have the comments in a popup window? I don't know about everyone else, but the popup window I get is so danged small, I end up not being able to see very much of the comments at once. If I could resize the window, it would be a lot more convenient.]

[I thought it more convenient to have the comments in a window sitting on top of the main post, but I'll see what the others think about it.]

[Hello, gang! Any feedback on this?]

The Moody Minstrel said...

[BTW, Dewkid, note again the very first comment on this thread. As it stands, you and Nekshi don't live in a house. You live in a simple [and likely old], working-class flat. I'll assume it's near the river. If Dave wants to change it to a rental house, he does have the assets for it.]

Nekshi emerges from the flat's living area as Granite Spear enters from outside. As always she is somewhat taken aback in the presence of the Shurian. She has had little experience with the large aquadic creatures, easy familiarization is still months in the future.

Using the pretext of locking the door to the flat to marshall her emotions, she soon turns to exchange pleasantries.
"Greetings and good morning, Granite," she says, bowing slightly at the waist.

"Today we will take in the local sites for awhile and then meet Master Zeton for lunch. We will also, prehaps, be joined by a local Farbett in order to futher our knowledge of this area's labor situation." She pauses awhile searching for what next to say.

"Hopefully you will find it agreeable to join with me in this endeavor." She bows again somewhat nervously.

"Perhaps we can begin by browsing some of the local merchant establishments as our lunch meeting isn't for some time. Although Master Zeton is not known for his punctuality, I wish to arrive at the cafe at a time earlier than transmitted in order to establish a dominant bargining postion."

She cocks her head sideways and awaits the vox-box reply as well as the inevitable bright color changes, inflations and tenacluar thrashing one deals with when communicating with a Shurian.

As for feedback, Robin's right, it is alittle constricting, especially when rambling. But I can live with it. Just have to scroll around alot.

Feedback - I'm able to resize the comment window that pops up. I generally maximize the window to read the comments and then reduce it's size when I go back to the main blog entry. If the group elects to change the format, that's fine by me.
